The Small Details: Email to Slack Integration

If you’re a Slack user, you know that it’s much more than just another instant messenger. From file sharing to video messages, and screen sharing to countless integrations, Slack really is “where work happens.” Gmail and Outlook users can take collaboration one step further by integrating their email with Slack.

This integration puts another delivery method in your hands so you can make sure your message is seen and answered. With today’s overflowing inboxes, it might take days for your important and timely update to get opened. We all work with those team members (you may even be one of them), who have a hard time getting emails answered, but are all over Slack messages. Email to Slack integration allows you to push messages in your inbox to a channel or direct message in Slack (it can include attachments too!). You can also automate this action, by setting up a specific bcc email address that will post to a Slack channel.

Slack provides a detailed step-by-step guide on how to set up and use this integration.

Here are some great examples of when this integration will come in handy:

  • You have an email that requires collaboration from a group. Push that message to Slack and prevent everyone from getting long email chains that will crowd their inboxes.
  • Do you have an important update you need everyone to see, but know that some group members are more likely to read email, while others are more likely to read a Slack message? Hit them both without crafting two messages with this integration.
  • You sent an email a few days ago with no response; try another delivery method by easily sending that email through Slack.
  • You need to send a request that will take the recipient some time to complete. After you’ve sent the email, share it to Slack to make sure they don’t have any questions. This will give the recipient both a detailed reminder in their email, as well as a quick place for questions.

People communicate in different ways. Being able to deliver an email via inbox or Slack will help you reach team members in the way that works best for them.
